la luz es como el agua (light is like water) was inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s short story of the same title. The composition is based on the process of reflection, transformation and, ultimately, the nature of transcendence— in this case the electroacoustic part casts the acoustic qualities of the string quartet into alternative dimensions.

une, inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition VIII, refers to the process of unification. The performer serves as a mediator among a collection of independent forces that, through time, coalesce into larger groupings. At the most basic structural level this is achieved through the expansion of time and timbrally by eliciting resonant qualities from particular instruments (resonance as a blurring device). une also denotes my first attempt at using spatial elements in composition and continues my interest in the extension of acoustic instruments through technological means. In this work, the performer triggers live spatialization cues and/or prerecorded material.

Inspired by a quote by Gabriel García Márquez, la poesía de los utensilios domésticos (the poetry of domestic utensils) deals with the functional use of household objects and their transformation towards gesture expressive sound elements. The composition is imbedded with a play on the perceptual struggle between what is real or imagined as inspired by the literary concept of magic realism. la poesía de los utensilios domésticos was selected for performance at the 2008 International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) in Belfast, Ireland.

Recording

ecos translucentes (translucent echoes) is foremost concerned with the process of recollection and inevitable fragmentation of imagery imprinted in our memory through daily encounters with our surroundings— in this case, that of the Ludlow neighborhood in Cincinnati, OH. The role of the imagination is varied in this process. Imagination serves as a type of glue attempting to reconstruct events, which in turn may involve the creation of unforseen (perhaps fantastical) circumstances. It also allows us the ability to appreciate the intrinsic qualities of everyday occurrences revealing to us an implicit language. What may first appear as an ordinary sensory experience is therefore revealed as a meaning-bearing reality.
